| characters | a person, animal or imaginary creature that takes part in the action of the story |
| charaterization | dvelopment of characters in fiction |
| character trait | consistent part of a character's personality |
| main characters | characters at the center of a story's action |
| minor characters | less important characters in a story |
| static characters | characters who remain unchanged in the story |
| dynamic characters | characters that grow or change in the story |
| flat characters | are minor characters who do not tend to undergo emotional change or growth. (few character traits) |
| round characters | one that presents a full picture of his or her qualities: what he or she looks like, what he is thinking or feeling |
| setting | when and where a story takes place |
| conflict | the struggle between two or more forces |
| internal conflict | this occurs when a charater has an inner struggle when trying to make a decision |
| external conflict | a struggle between a character and any force outside himself |
| complications | the series of events. complications happen as the story continues. Complications are also called the rising action |
| rising action | the main charater tries to solve the problem which becomes more complicated |
| climax | the highest point of interest in the story |
| falling action | the characters feel the effects of the climatic event. |
| resolution | the final stage of a story in which loose ends are tiede up and brought to a close. |
| conclusion | the final or end part. |
| theme | the central idea message in a work of literature |
| surprise ending | an unexpected twist in the plot of a story. |
| universal theme | when the theme is common to all cultures. |
| predict | to guess what will happen next. |
| suspense | excitement or tension |
| irony | the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; the words say one thing but mean another. |
| flashback | an interruption in the present action of a story to flash backwards and tell what happened in an earlier time |
