Seasons, Day and Night, Phases of the Moon, Tides Science SOL 3.8
|
| A | B |
| axis | imaginary straight line through the center of the earth around which the earth spins |
| rotate | spinning on an axis (Ex. The earth and moon spin on their axes.) |
| orbit | path that an object takes while moving around another object (The earth orbits the sun and the moon orbits the earth.) |
| rotation | one complete spin (Ex. The earth completes its rotation in 24 hours. Within this 24 hours we have day and night.) |
| revolution | one complete orbit (circle) around the sun (Ex. The earth completes its revolution in 365 days = 1 year.) |
| seasons | (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) Each season lasts about three months. Four seasons make one year. As the earth revolves around the sun, different parts of the earth are closer to the sun than others. This affects the amount of light and heat they receive, thus casuing the four seasons. |
| satellite | object that orbits around a larger object (Ex. The moon is a satellite of the earth.) |
| moon | a satellite of the earth |
| phase | the lighted part of the moon that we see from the earth |
| tides | daily rising and falling of the oceans' waves caused by the pull of the moon's gravity on the earth (There are 2 high tides and 2 low tides in approximately a 24 hour period or one day.) |
