acquisitive (adj)greedy, quick to learn (TIP: think of the word "acquire"--see it in our word? If you're greedy, you "acquire" things!)
banal (adj)boring, common (TIP: You would "ban" all boring things if you could, right?!)
belabor (v)to overwork or work excessively (TIP- see the word "labor" right in there?)
coherent (adj)logical, understandable (To understand something, you need to "here" it!)
congeal (v)to thicken, go from liquid to solid (TIP- think of the word "gel")
emulate (v)to imitate or want to be like someone else
reconnaissance (adj)a survey or inspection, usually for military purposes (TIP- this word is hard to spell. Practice!)
taciturn (adj)habitually silent, quiet.
tenable (adj)capable of being defended
substantiate (v)to prove (TIP- you need "substance" to prove things)
accost(v) to approach aggressively
avid(adj) enthusiastic
brackish(adj) somewhat salty (TIP- think of the noise Mrs. Ross would make if she unexpectedly tasted salty water)
deviate(v) to veer from the original plan
halcyon(adj)calm, peaceful, tranquil
maelstrom(n) literally, a violent whirlpool. Figuratively, a disordered situation. TIP- if you transpose the letters at the end, you get "storm," which is what could cause a violent whirlpool or disordered state of affairs :)
myopic(adj). Literally, deals with nearsightedness. Figuratively, pertains to someone who doesn't think things through, shortsighted
overt(adj) something out in the open; not concealed. TIP- Remember that "covert" is "Covered" or concealed, and if you remove the "c", you UNCOVER it...making it OVERT!
incendiary(adj) LITERALLY- used for setting something on fire FIGURATIVELY- something that could cause conflicts or problems TIP- This sort of reminds us of "incinerator", which is where we burn things.
talisman(n)An object said to posess special powers--like a good luck charm
