Samuel Adams | Cousin of John Adams- created the Committee of Correspondence- Leader of the Sons of Liberty-Representative from Massachusetts to the 1st Continental Congress- Cousin to John Adams- Established the Committee of Correspondence after the Boston Massacre |
Alliance | an agreement between nationsor groups to help each other against other nations or groups. |
Writ of Assistance | court order that allowed officials to make searches without saying for what they were searching. Colonists felt this was a violation of their rights. |
Monopoly | total control of a market for a certain product. Complete control over the buying and selling of a certain product, supply , or good. |
Repeal | the official end or removal or reversal of a law |
Minutemen | citizen soldiers who could be ready to fight in a minute's notice- they were ready to fight very quickly , with little warning or notice. |
Blockade | shutting off of a port with ships to keep people or goods and supplies from moving in or out of that port. |
Mercenary | a soldier that serves another country for money- a hired soldier |
Patriot | colonist who favored independence from Britain and was willing to fight for it |
Loyalist | colonist who remained loyal to Britain and the king- they were in the minority in the colonies |
King George III | King of England during the time that the 13 Colonies were beginning to think of seperating from England |
Benjamin Franklin | From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania- owner of the "Piladelphia Gazette" newspaper that published the picture of a snake chopped up into pieces warning "Join or Die" inorder to encourage the colonies to work together- Representative from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the 2nd Continental Congress |
Thomas Jefferson | Young Virginia lawyer- Representative from Virginia to the 2nd Continental Congress |
French and Indian War | 1754-1763- War between England and France. Colonists sided with England and most Native Americans sided with France. Britain won and the results were that the French lose ALL NA possessions- Britain left with large debt- Colonists sense of unity and purpose- Ohio River Valley settled by colonists |
Proclamation of 1763 | 1763- British gov’t banned colonists to live west of the Appalachian Mts. Colonists were angry that they could not live where they wanted- ignored the king and his command |
Sugar Act | 1764- Tax on all products coming into the Colonies, such as molasses-Harsh punishment of smugglers-Colonists very angry- protested |
Quartering Act | 1765- Colonists had to provide housing, food, and other supplies to English troops- forced- Colonists extremely angry and felt rights were being violated- protested |
Stamp Act | 1765- Tax on all paper goods- Tax stamps on newspapers, wills, licenses, land titles, playing cards etc.- Colonists outraged- boycotted British goods |
Boston Massacre | March 5, 1770- Angry group of workers and sailors surrounded small group of English soldiers- Soldiers fired on unarmed colonists- 5 dead and 6 wounded |
Committee of Correspondence | a communication system created by Samuel Adams to keep all the colonies informed of what Britain was doing in all the colonies- these committees unified the colonies |
Tea Act | 1773- Created a monopoly for the British East India Company- Tax on tea- Colonist are angry, especially merchants hurt by the monopoly of the EIC |
Boston Tea Party | Dec. 16, 1773- Sons of Liberty dress as Native Americans and dump 342 cases of tea into Boston Harbor protesting the Tea Act- 90,000 pounds of tea destroyed- Colonists felt justified |
Intolerable Acts | 1774- 4 harsh laws passed by King George III in response to the Boston Tea party- Port of Boston closed- Increase power of the royal governor- Cut the power of local town meetings- Got rid of the Upper House of the Massachusetts Legislature- Strengthened the Quartering Act- First Continental Congress- demand repeal of IA- training of militias-boycott of British goods- prepare to fight if have to train militia |
