8th grade Geology Unit Review

AB
1. What is the preserved remains or trace of living things?Fossils
What is the age of a rock (the number of years since it was formed?)Absolute Age
What is the time it takes for 1/2 of the radioactive atoms to decay?Half Life
What is the age of a rock compared to the ages of other rocks?Relative Age
What is the remains of any living thing that was widespread, but lived for only a short part of the Earth's history?Index Fossils
What is a rock that change because of heat and pressure?Metamorphic Rock
What is a rock that forms from the cooling of melted rock?Igneous Rock
What is the rock that forms when particles of other rocks are pressed and cemented together?Sedimentary Rock
What is the process by which natural forces moved small piees of rock and soil from one place to another?erosion
What is a naturally occuring inorganic solid that has a definite crystal structure and definite chemical formula?mineral
What is the chemical of physical breakdown of rocks?weathering
What is the repeating pattern of atoms?crystal structure
List the eras of the geologic scale in order from oldest to youngest.PreCambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic
List 2 facts about determining the relative age of a rock. The Law of Superposition states that the oldest rock is at the bottom and the younger rock layers are above it. Finding the age of index fossils helps identify the age of sedimentary rock layers.
What are rocks made of? Write the sequence of size from largest to smallest.Rocks-->Minerals-->Crystals-->Atoms
How does luster help identify a mineral? The amount of light reflected by a mineral. Often described as metallic, glassy, pearly, or dull. Once you know a mineral's luster, it will help narrow the search of possible mineral names.
How does a streak test help identify a mineral?Rubbing a mineral against the rough side of ceramic plate. The powder left behind shows the true interior color of the mineral.
How does hardness help identify a mineral? You use a variety of objects from the softest to the hardest to try to scratch a mineral. Once you know it's hardness number, you can look up the name of the mineral.
EQ #3: How do rocks change? Be able to label a rock cycle diagram.See EQ review page. Know how each type of rock in the rock cycle is formed.
What is the amount of radioactive decay in an element over time? Be able to answer questions from a graph.See SG #2 for diagram.
How is a fossil made?An organism dies, it's burried in sediment, the water dissolves the minerals that hardens the bones into fossils.
What is the name of the process for the magma heated by the Earth's core rises toward the crust. At the crust the magma cools, and sinks back toward the Earth's core.convection currents
Give the name and chemical formula for a mineral of your choice.Examples include halite (salt) NaCl or Quartz SiO2
Which rock layers are the oldest? Which rock layers are closest in age?See Review Sheet for diagram.
EQ #1: Describe evidence that Earth's life forms have had many changes?See EQ Review page. know about simplest + complex plants, animals and their eras.
EQ #2: Describe how rocks show evidence that Earth is 4.6 billion years old.See EQ Review page. Know about relative age, law of superposition, and index fossils.
EQ #4: Structurally, how are rocks different?See EQ REview page. Know about the size sequence, chemical formulas, crystal structure, and hardness properties of 2 minerals.
