Interstate Commerce Act | Act whereby the US government could monitor or regulate the railroad industry. |
Populists | Political party made up of farmers who helped to pass the Interstate Commerce Act. |
Progressives | Political group that set their sights on fixing the problems of child labor, political corruptness, poverty, helath, and education. |
Imperialism | Time period of colony gathering: Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Philippines, Guam, etc. |
Panama Canal | Land gained by the US when they helped the Panamian people successfuly rebel against their motherland, Columbia. |
US Navy | Branch of the military that supported Roosevelt's foreign policy" Speak softly and carry a big stick" |

Immigration Act of 1924 | After WWI, the US went back to isolationism which included this act to LIMIT the amount of Southern and Eastern Europeans and Asians. |

Harlem Renaissance | Resurgence of pride in African American ART, LITERATURE, and MUSIC. |

over speculation | Occurs when people buy stocks in the hopes that the prices will continue to drive upwards. No guarantee. |
Buying on Margin | Paying only 10% of the value of a stock and owing the bank the other 90%. Stocks weren't really worth the prices charged. |
Black Tuesday | October 29, 1929. The last and final crash of the US stock market as large investors sold off all stocks kickstarting the Great Depression |
Great Depression | 1930's. Massive unemployment and financial collapse of the US financial structure. Lasts until WWII. |
Dust Bowl | Area hit hard by drought producing such dry conditions that dust storms miles tall and wide blew across the region. |
Grapes of Wrath | Famous novel by John Steinbeck that describes the fictional story of a Great Depression family struggling to survive. |
California | The state of opportunity or at least jobs until the state turned away the tens of thousands looking for work. |
Franklin D. Roosevelt. | President during most of the depression. Enacted massive socialist changes where the government takes on the responbility to feed, cloth, house, and provide work for citizens. |
Social Security Act | Law that reduced paychecks in order to pay for the elederly, needy, and the handicapped. Social Security is still in force. |
