| Gully | A large groove in the earth's surface made of man rills coming together. |
| Rills | Tiny grooves cut in soil |
| Runoff | Water that moves over the earth's surface |
| Sediment | Material that is made of small pieces of rock, soil or remains of living things. |
| Gravity | The force that moves material downhill |
| Stream | A channel along which water flows down a slope and rarely dries up. |
| Tributary | A stream or river that flows into a larger river. |
| Meander | A loop or snakelike bend formed in a river from the banks being eroded. |
| Alluvial Fan | A wide sloping deposit of sediment where a stream leaves a mountain range and enters an open area. |
| Groundwater | Water found under the ground on top of impermeable sediment |
| Flood plain | The flat, wide area of land along a river |
| Oxbow lake | The meander that has been cut off from the river. May form when rivers flood. |
| Stalactite | An icicle shaped formation that forms on a cave roof or ceiling. |
| Abrasion | The wearing down of rock due to a grinding action. |
| Deposition | The process by which sediment is placed down or deposited. |
| Erosion | The process of removing weathered rock and sediment from an area. |
| Carmens River | Begins in Middle Island, ends near Bellport. Flows north to south into the Bellport Bay |
| Connetquot River | Begins in Hauppague and ends in Oakdale |
| Nissequogue River | Begins in Hauppague, ends in Kings Park. It flows south to north. |
| Ronkonkoma Moraine | Moraine left by an advance about 60,000 years ago |
| Harbor Hill Advance | The movement of a glacier that occurred about 17, 000 years ago. |
| Wisconsin Glacier | A giant ice sheet that covered most of North America during the Ice Age. |
| Kettle Lake | Formed from ice melting underground leaving a depression that is filled by coming in contact with an aquifer. |
| Outwash Plain | A flat sandy area found downhill of a moraine formed from sand being washed off a glacier. |
| Moraine | A hill made of glacial debris left where the front of the glacier stopped. |
| Glacial Debris | Material left behind by eroding glaciers |
| Harbor | Formed by large ice fingers digging into the moraine |
| Potential Energy | Energy that is stored for later use |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy that an object has to its motion |
| Load | The amount of sediment in a river |
| Slope | Angle of incline that water flows down due to gravity. |
| Abrasion | The wearing away of rock due to a grinding action |
| Friction | The force that opposes the motion of one surface as it moves across another. |
| Turbulence | Water that flows in every different direction |
