| Lossless | Picture quality is retained as the image changes sizes. |
| Lossy | Picture quality is lessened (pixels are lost) when an image is resized. |
| Portability | Ease at which files are opened, modified and viewed across software and browsers. |
| Transparency | Allows the background color of an image to be replaced or changed so the graphic can blend into it. |
| Raster Graphics | Also called bitmap graphics; images that are composed of pixels that have a fixed resolution and cannot be resized without losing quality. |
| GIF | Graphics Interchange Format - most common format for text, logos, clip art and standard format on the web for animation. |
| JPEG | Joint Photographic Experts Group - standard use for photographs, scanned images and natural artwork; supports streaming and is lossy. |
| BMP | Bitmap (Windows) - used to create icons and wallpaper; lossless and has a large file size. |
| PNG | Portable Network Graphic - supports streaming and transparency; replaces GIF and TIFF images; used for online viewing of images and websites. |
| TIFF | Tagged Interleave Format - used for high resolution printing and desktop publishing. |
| Vector Graphics | Composed of mathematical formulas that define lines, nodes (drawing points) and curves of digital images; can be 2D or 3D. |
| Meta Graphics | Graphics that include both raster and vector information. |
