GraphicsAnything on a page that is not actual text. Includes simple line drawings to images on the WWW.
Color DepthNumber of bits per pixel that can be displayed on a computer screen.
BitEach is composed of two values - 0 and 1.
CompressionHow an image is stored.
LosslessPicture quality is retained as the image changes sizes.
LossyPicture quality is lessened (pixels are lost) when an image is resized.
PortabilityEase at which files are opened, modified and viewed across software and browsers.
TransparencyAllows the background color of an image to be replaced or changed so the graphic can blend into it.
Raster GraphicsAlso called bitmap graphics; images that are composed of pixels that have a fixed resolution and cannot be resized without losing quality.
GIFGraphics Interchange Format - most common format for text, logos, clip art and standard format on the web for animation.
JPEGJoint Photographic Experts Group - standard use for photographs, scanned images and natural artwork; supports streaming and is lossy.
BMPBitmap (Windows) - used to create icons and wallpaper; lossless and has a large file size.
PNGPortable Network Graphic - supports streaming and transparency; replaces GIF and TIFF images; used for online viewing of images and websites.
TIFFTagged Interleave Format - used for high resolution printing and desktop publishing.
Vector GraphicsComposed of mathematical formulas that define lines, nodes (drawing points) and curves of digital images; can be 2D or 3D.
Meta GraphicsGraphics that include both raster and vector information.
