Franklin D. Roosevelt4 terms- served during most of the depression and WW II, Died in 1945 and was followed by Harry S Truman. New Deal: FDR’s plan to end the Depression
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)New Deal Program Created jobs for young men. Men worked in exchange for housing, food, and money. Built many of GA’s parks, sewer systems, bridges, etc.
Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)New Deal Program Raised the price of farm products by limiting supply. Farmers were paid to produce less to drive the price up so each farmer made for money for their crops.
Rural Electrification Authority (REA)New Deal Program Brought electricity to the rural (country) areas of the U.S.
Social Security ActNew Deal Program Passed in 1935. Helped to provide old-age benefits for retiring workers. Also offered insurance for the unemployed and disabled.
World War II (WWII)In 1938, Germany, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, attempted to take back land lost in WWI. By 1940, Germany controlled large portions of Europe.
Lend-LeaseAmerican policy, at the beginning of WWII, to lend or lease (rent) weapons to Great Britain and the Soviet Union.
Pearl HarborDecember 7, 1941. Japan surprise attacks the American Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The USA declared war on Japan

Victory Gardensmall family gardens to make sure soldiers would have enough food
Bell AircraftBegan assembling B-29 bombers for the U.S. Army. Over 28,000 employees helped to finish 668 planes.
Savannah and Brunswick shipyardsBoth cities housed shipyards which were used to create cargo ships (nicknamed “Liberty Ships” by FDR).
Richard RussellU.S. Senator (38 yrs). Worked to bring wartime opportunities (jobs) to GA. Helped to bring over a dozen military bases to GA. Troops all over the country trained in camps in Georgia.
Carl VinsonU.S. Representative (25 consecutive terms). Helped to expand the U.S. Navy which helped U. S. supply Allies, recover from Pearl Harbor, and later send troops into battle. Much of this expansion (building of ships) took place at GA’s shipyards in Savannah and Brunswick. Vinson’s peers called him “Admiral.”
