Mathematics Chapter 13 Geometry

See if you know the basic vocabulary of geometry, including perimeter, area, volume, symmetry, and shape movements.

AB
perimeterThe distance around a polygon, found by adding the lengths of the sides. P = L + L + W + W
areaThe number of square units needed to cover a region, found by multiplication. A = L x W
line symmetryThe property of a figure that can be folded and the two parts will match.
line of symmetryThe vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line on which you fold a figure to get two matching sides.
congruentFigures that have the same size AND shape.
similarFigures that have the same shape but are NOT the same size.
asymmetricalA figure that CANNOT be folded along a line so that the two parts will match.
bilateral symmetryThe property of a figure that allows it to be folded so the two halves match.
complex figureA shape that is made up of two or more shapes.
rotational symmetryA figure has rotational symmetry if, after a given number of rotations (180 degree turn or less) of the figure about a point, the figure lies in its original position.
square unitsA unit for measuring area.
