Mathematics Chapter 13 Geometry
See if you know the basic vocabulary of geometry, including perimeter, area, volume, symmetry, and shape movements.
|
| A | B |
| perimeter | The distance around a polygon, found by adding the lengths of the sides. P = L + L + W + W |
| area | The number of square units needed to cover a region, found by multiplication. A = L x W |
| line symmetry | The property of a figure that can be folded and the two parts will match. |
| line of symmetry | The vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line on which you fold a figure to get two matching sides. |
| congruent | Figures that have the same size AND shape. |
| similar | Figures that have the same shape but are NOT the same size. |
| asymmetrical | A figure that CANNOT be folded along a line so that the two parts will match. |
| bilateral symmetry | The property of a figure that allows it to be folded so the two halves match. |
| complex figure | A shape that is made up of two or more shapes. |
| rotational symmetry | A figure has rotational symmetry if, after a given number of rotations (180 degree turn or less) of the figure about a point, the figure lies in its original position. |
| square units | A unit for measuring area. |
