Point | Move the mouse so that the pointer is over an item. |
Click | Press the left mouse button once and let go. |
Double-Click | Press the left mouse button twice quickly and let go. |
Drag | Press and hold down the left mouse button and move the pointer to another location. |
Icons | Picture symbols. |
Keyboard | An arrangement of letter, figure, symbol, control, function, and editing keys and a numeric keypad. |
Software | A set of step-by-step instructions for the computer, written by computer programmers in a programming language like C++. |
Hardware | Computer equipment. |
Operating System | The program that manages other programs on the computer. It will prepare the computer to receive your instructions and run software. |
Application Software | A computer program designed to perform a specific task directly for the user or for another application. |
Work Area | Keyboard directly in front of chair; front edge of keyboard even with edge of desk; monitor placed for easy viewing; and book at right of keyboard. |
Keying Position | Fingers curved and upright over home keys; wrists low, but not touching keyboard; forearms parallel to slant of keyboard; body tall, sitting back in chair; feet on floor for balance; and eyes on copy. |
Home-Key Position | Fingers on home keys of a, s, d, f, j, k, l, and ;. |
Ergonomics | Seeks to provide comfort and support for your posture to help prevent injury. |
Alphanumeric Keys | Letters, numbers, and symbols. |
Numeric Keypad | Keys at the right side of the keyboard used to enter numeric copy and perform calculations. |
Function (F) Keys | Used to execute commands, sometimes with other keys. |
Arrow Keys | Move insertion point up, down, left, or right. |
Escape | Closes a software menu or dialog box. |
Tab | Moves the insertion point to a preset position. |
Caps Lock | Used to make all capital letters. |
Shift | Makes capital letters and symbols shown at tops of number keys. |
Control | With other key(s), executes commands. |
Alternate | With other key(s), executes commands. |
Space Bar | Inserts a space in text. |
Enter (Return) | Moves insertion point to margin and down to next line; also used to execute commands. |
Delete | Removes text to the right of insertion point. |
Num Lock | Activates/deactivates numeric keypad. |
Insert | Activates insert or typeover. |
Backspace | Deletes text to the left of insertion point. |
