Am History Unit 1-Thinking and Reading like a Historian

These terms are used with our 1ST unit of study in American History to 1877. Practice them often. Understanding these terms will allow greater participation in our class discussions and greater preparation for the unit quizzes. Am History Content standard #1: Primary and Secondary sources are used to examine events from multiple perspectives and to present and defend a position.

ArcheologistOne who's perspective focuses on studying: prehistoric people and their cultures by analyzing artifacts, inscriptions and monuments to make sense of the past
EconomistOne who's perspective focuses on studying: production, distribution and consumption of goods and services and the material welfare of humankind
GeographerOne who's perspective focuses on studying: the natural features of the Earth's surface, including topography, climate, soil, vegetation and humankind's response to them
HistorianAn expert in history who's perspective focuses on writing about history by keeping track of events and trying to piece together what has already happened from known facts.
Political ScientistOne who's perspective focuses on studying: politics, political institutions, laws, voting and conduct of government. They study ethics and political behavior.

secondary sourcea document or thing describing an event, person, place or thing created AFTER the time of the event or person. I am a copy or representation of the past used for understanding
