MOAC Lesson 3 Character Formatting key Terms

Vocabularies in this lesson will cover and focus on how students can format characters within Word 2013 documents.

characterAny single letter, number, symbol, or punctuation mark.
character stylesA style that is applied to individual characters or words that users have selected.
fontA set of characters that have the same design.
live previewLive preview shows you how your document will look with the selected feature.
monospacedA font in which all of its characters take up the same amount of horizontal space.
paragraph stylesA style in which the formats are applied instantly to all text in the paragraph where the insertion point is located, whether or not text is selected.
point sizeA measurement that refers to the height of characters with one point equaling approximately 1/12 of an inch.
proportional spaceA font in which the horizontal spacing varies.
sans serifA font that does not have the small line extensions on its characters.
serifA font that has small lines at the beginning and end of characters and that is usually used with large amounts of text.
Text EffectsA new font command group that adds a distinctive appearance, such as outlines, shadows, glows or reflections, to selected text.
WordArtDecorative text that enhances text.
Modifying stylescan change the appearance of the document by changing the formatting, changing the alignment, line spacing, font color/size etc. Changing a style can be applied only to apply to only the document or the Styles group.
Format Painterwill allow you to copy the same attributes once or many times. This process saves time in having to repeat the same commands.
Clear formattingfeature clears all formatting and returns the text to plain text and is located in two locations with the first being on the Font group and the second in the Styles group in the More menu.
