banded columnsColumns in a table that are formatted in alternating colors.

demotingWhen using the Navigation pane, to format a heading with a subordinate level heading style; for example, to change text from the Heading 1 style to the Heading 2 style.
dot leaderA row of dots (or other characters) between tabbed text.
endnoteExplanatory comment or reference that appears at the end of a section or document, but that is linked to a superscript reference number in the main text.
footerText, date, or other information that is printed below the bottom page margin; also, the blank area at the bottom of a page where such information can be inserted.

gridlinesNonprinting lines that reveal the underlying structure of a table.
Header and Footer viewA Word view in which a document’s header and footer areas are available for editing, and the main document is unavailable for editing.
headerText, date, or other information that is printed above the top page margin; also, the blank area at the top of a page where such information can be inserted.
header rowThe top row of a table, containing the headings that identify the type of information in each column.
promotingWhen using the Navigation pane, to format a subordinate heading with a higher level heading style; for example, to change text from the Heading 2 style to the Heading 1 style.
Read ModeA document view designed to make reading a Word document on a screen as easy as possible.
recordA complete set of information in a table; typically, each row in a table is a separate record.
reference markerSmall, superscript number in the main text that is linked to a footnote or endnote.
sectionA part of a document that can have its own page orientation, margins, headers, footers, and so on, separate from the rest of the document.
section breakA nonprinting divider that separates a document into sections.
SmartArtA diagram consisting of text and shapes, such as circles, squares, or arrows, created with the SmartArt button in the Illustrations group on the INSERT tab.
sortTo rearrange information in alphabetical, numerical, or chronological order.
subheadingA heading that is subordinate to a higher level heading.
subordinateTerm used to refer to a heading that is logically grouped under another, higher level heading; in the Navigation pane, subordinate headings are indented below higher level headings.
superscriptTerm used to describe text or a number that is raised slightly above the line of text.
tab stopA location on the horizontal ruler where the insertion point moves when you press the Tab key.
tableInformation arranged in a grid made up of horizontal rows and vertical columns.
