Romulus | first king of Rome, son of Mars, raised by a wolf, killed his brother, founded Rome, got women from the Sabine tribe. |
Tarpeia | Girl who betrayed Rome because she wanted the gold bracelets the enemy wore on their left arms. The enemy then crushed her with the shields they wore on their left arms because, even though she helped them, she showed poor judgment in betraying her city. A cliff was named after her because the Romans threw traitors from it. |
Horatius Cocles | When the enemy was approaching Rome, he single-handedly defended a bridge (which was the access point to the city) against them while the other Romans destroyed the bridge behind him. |
Mucius Scaevola | A Roman sent to assassinate Lars Porsenna (an attacking general). He was caught, so he put his right hand in a fire and let it burn to show how strong Romans were. This impressed the attacking general to the point that he retreated in fear of these strong Romans. |
The Horatii Brothers | Three Roman brothers chosen to fight three brothers from the enemy tribe in order to decide the outcome of a war. Two of the brothers were killed quickly, but all three of the other brothers were wounded, so the last brother ran in the other direction to separate the other brothers, then he was able to kill them one at a time, winning the war for Rome. |
Cloelia | A Roman girl taken prisoner by the enemy tribe. She escaped with some other women and swam home across the Tiber River. The enemy demanded her return, but after she was returned, they let her go because of how brave she had been. |
Tullia | The daughter of the sixth king of Rome, she killed her own father and ran over his corpse with her carriage so that her husband could be king. She and her husband were later kicked out of Rome on corruption charges. |
Lars Porsenna | An Etruscan general who attacked Rome with Tarquinius Superbus after Tarquinius had been kicked out of the city. Mucius Scaevola tried to assassinate him, Horatius Cocles defended a bridge against his troops, and Cloelia escaped from him. |
Lucretia | The model Roman wife, the son of TArquinius Superbus raped her when he saw what a model wife she was (she stayed home and weaved, was modest, etc.). She killed herself rather than live with the shame. This prompted her husband and his friends to exile the king and institute a Republic in place of the monarchy. |
Brutus | In some stories, he is Lucretia's husband, in others he is Lucretia's husband's friend, but either way he is one of the Romans who exiled the last king and instituted the Republic. He was elected one of the first consuls (like a president) |
Cincinnatus | A Roman farmer and statesman with high moral standards. He was appointed dictator during a time of crisis. He did his duty, defended his city and ended the crisis; then he returned to his farm to live a modest life (instead of exploiting the power he had been given). |
