|
A | B |
mixture | two more substances mixed together, but not chemically combined |
homogeneous mixture | a type of mixture that is the same throughout |
heterogeneous mixture | a mixture that is different throughout |
solution | a type of homogeneous mixture consisting of a solvent and one or more solutes |
solvent | the largest amount of a substance in a solution |
solute | the substance in a solution that is present in the smallest amount |
residue | in the process of filtration, the substance left behind on the filter paper |
filtrate | in the process of filtration, the substance(s) that pass through the filter paper |
filtration | a separation method where a mixture is poured onto a filter and part of the mixture is retained on the filter (residue) and part of the mixture passes through the filter (filtrate) |
evaporation | a method for separating a mixture where molecules escape from a liquid form of a mixture and transfer to a gaseous state. |
chromatography | a separation process used to separate, inks, pigments, dyes and DNA |
magnetic attraction | a separation method used to separate magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials by using a magnet |
settling | a separation process where a mixture is allowed to sit undisturbed until a substance has fallen out of the liquid part of the mixture |
