SystemsA group of parts that interact to accomplish a task
MatterThe “stuff” of the world. There is solid, liquid, and gas “stuff.”
SubsystemsMini-systems that work together to make a larger system.
Forms of EnergyLight, thermal (heat), chemical, kinetic (motion), sound, and electricity are all energy.
OutputMatter, energy, or information that flows out of a system.
Open SystemA system where energy and stuff (matter) can flow through a system.
WholeConnected parts that make a complete system.
Closed SystemA system where ONLY energy (not stuff) can flow through the system.
PartOne piece of a system that has a specific role or function.
BoundaryDefining where a system “ends.” Can be moved depending on the question you are trying to answer.
FunctionThe purpose or role of something. What something does… It’s job.
InputMatter, energy, or information flowing into a system.
