How did Spanish colonization in North and Central America begin?Spain formed colonies to protect its lands and govern the people.

Early settlers often ran low on food and supplies which forced them to return to England. John White led a group of settlers to Roanoke. Shortly he left to gather more supplies. When he returned all the people were gone. What happened is a mystery.
Why was Jamestown established, and who was responsible for its creation?Jamestown was established because the English wanted a colony in Virginia (America). They felt having a colony would earn investors of the Virginia Company a profit. The Virginia Company was owned by a number of people who used their money to start the colony. They are responsible for its creation.
What were the downfalls of Jamestown's location?The land was low and swampy with a lot of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can carry deadly diseases. Also, many of the settlers could not farm and chose to mine for gold rather than plant or gather food.
Why might Jamestown have become another Roanoke if it was not for John Smith.John Smith's governing helped the town survive. He insisted that people who do not work do not eat. People farmed, built shelters and put of palisades to protect the colony from Native Americans.
How did Jamestown grow?Jamestown grew as a result additional settlers. Settlers discovered that a crop called tobacco grew well in the low, swampy land. This crop made a profit.
What was the early form of government in Jamestown?The colonist developed a legislature responsible for governing the colony called the House of Burgesses in 1619. Colonist could select representatives to voice their concerns. Only male landowners could vote and participate governing the land.
What happened during the Powhatan Wars?There were continuous battles between the Powhattans and settlers. The English occupied more of the Powhattan land because of new settlers needing land. This upset the Powhattans and led to war. The King James I declared Jamestown a royal colony in order keep it from failing.
