Input DeviceTypically a keyboard or a mouse
KeyboardAllows you to input text and issue commands on a computer.
ErgonomicDesigned to fit the natural placement of your hands and may reduce the risk of repetitive-motion injuries.
Pointing DeviceControls the pointer - a small arrow or other symbol - on the computer screen. Used to select commands and manipulate text or graphics on the screen.
MouseThe most popular pointing device. You control the pointer by sliding or using the scroll wheel.
TrackballA rolling ball on the top of a mouse. You control the movement of the pointer by moving only the ball (rather than the whole mouse).
Touch or track padFound on laptops. Detects the motion of your fingers. You can click by tapping this pad.
Touch screenAccepts commands from your fingers. Displays the output simultaneously. Found on ATMs, smartphones and tablets.
MicrophoneUsed to record sound or communicate with others using audio or video conferencing software.
Voice-recognition softwareAllows you to input data and commands with a microphone.
ScannerA device that captures the image of a photograph or piece of paper and stores it digitally.
OCR softwareOptical character recognition software, which translates a scanned text document so it can be edited in a word-processing program.
