Deficiency / Statement of DeficiencyThe state nursing home review team leaves an exit report after the inspection/survey that outlines deficiencies noted during the inspection. If deficiencies are not corrected, a letter from DHSR will be sent to the nursing home that notifies the nursing home that they are on sanction and cannot participate in nurse aide training. This notice of sanction will state the reason for the sanction.

Finding(when used in conjunction with the Nurse Aide program) means a determination by the Department that an allegation of patient abuse or neglect, or misappropriation of patient property has been substantiated (in nursing facilities)
GeriatricPertaining to the aged or elderly

HCPR Health Care Personnel Registry(Section of DHSR)
Home Care Agencies/ServicesProvide care in the home for people needing health services, but not hospitalization.
Hospice Care / Palliative CareCare given in facilities or homes for people who have less than six months to live. Goals are comfort and dignity
Hospitals FacilitiesFacilities staffed by physicians, nurses, and support staff who provide inpatient care to those who need close monitoring and treatment and outpatient care for those who need treatment but not close monitoring.
Long?term Care Facilities or LTCF or LTCFacilities where 24?hour supervised nursing care is given to residents needing a high level of care for ongoing conditions. AKA nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, residential facilities, rehabilitation centers, or extended care facilities. Residents may be disabled or elderly.
MedicalPertaining to the science of treatment that includes drugs, diet, exercise and other non?surgical means.
MedicaidMedical assistance program for low?income people. Funded by federal government and each state. Eligibility determined by income and special circumstances.
MedicareFederal health insurance program established in 1965 for people aged 65 or older and people with permanent kidney failure or certain disabilities.
Organizational ChartChart A diagram of a facility showing how each department fits into the system, identifies lines of authority, and areas of responsibility. Workers can identify who the immediate supervisor is.
Pending AllegationInformation entered onto the Health Care Personnel Registry about a health care personnel (an unlicensed healthcare facility employee who has direct access to resident, clients, or their property) that the individual is under investigation for an allegation that was made against him/her.
Personal Care Aide (PCA)Personal attendants who assist people with basic tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and eating. They do not provide health?related services, but rather housekeeping and routine personal care. They may clean the house or apartment, do laundry, or change bed sheets. They often cook and plan meals for their clients. They may dress them, and sometimes bath and groom them. PCAs are not certified nor listed on the NC Personnel Care Registry.
Psychiatric careCare for persons with mental illness and disorders
Rehabilitation careCare that helps restore a person to the highest possible level of functioning, independence, control, and adaptation to a disability
SanctionA corrective measure for LTCs for noncompliance to federal and state nursing home laws and rules. When a LTC is on sanction, that LTC may not participate in nurse aide training.
SurgicalPertaining to the treatment of injury, deformity, and disease by manual and instrumental operations.
SurveyorsInspector from the state who visits nursing homes to determine if the nursing home meets federal and state rules
Terminal illnessAn illness from which the resident is not expected to recover and will die.
