The Parts of the Skull
Learn the bones and parts of the SKULL, their location and junction or features including (6) fontanelles of the fetal skull.
|
A | B |
Anterior (frontal) Fontanelle | largest fontanelle, diamond or lozenge-shaped, located at the Anterior, Superior, Midline portion of the skull forming the juncture of the Frontal & Parietal bones, and where the future Sagittal suture will form. |
Posterior (occipital) Fontanelle | triangular-shaped, located at the Posterior, Superior, Midline portion of the skull forming the juncture of the Occipital & Parietal bones, and where the future Sagittal suture will form. |
Coronal suture | located on the Anterior, Superior portion of the skull, between the Frontal & left & right Parietal bones. |
Sagittal suture | located midline on the skull running from the Anterior, Superior to the Posterior, Superior portion of skull between the left & right Parietal bones. |
Lambdoidal suture | located on the Posterior, Superior portion of the skull, between the Occipital and the left & right Parietal bones. |
Squamosal suture | there are 2 of theses sutures located on both the right & left Lateral sides of the skull, adjoining the left or right temporal and it's adjacent Parietal bone. |
Frontal Bone | (1 bone)Located on the Anterior, Superior portion of the skull, forms the forehead, some features are the Supraorbital foramina, Frontal sinus, & Coronal suture. |
Parietals | (2 bones)Located on the Posterior, Superior portion of the skull on the left & right sides of the Sagittal suture. |
Temporals | Located on the Lateral sides of the skull, Inferior to the Parietal bones, seperated from it's adjacent Parietal bone by the Squamosal suture. Features are Squamosal suture & portion, External Acoustic Meatus, Mandibular fossa, Zygomatic, Styloid, & Mastoid processes, Petrous portion. |
Occipital | Located on the Posterior portion of the skull, inferior to the Parietal bones & seperated from the parietal bones by the Lambdoidal suture. Features are Lambdoidal suture, Foramen Magnum, & Occipital condyle. |
Ethmoid | Located on the Anterior part of the base of the cranium & the medial surface of each orbit of the eye, Features are Perpendicular plate, Cribriform plate, Crista Galli, Ethmoid Air Cells. |
Sphenoid | Bat-shaped bone running from one Lateral side of the Anterior base of the skull to the other Lateral side of skull, seen fully from the Interior of the skull. Know as the "Keystone of the skull" beacause it articulates with all the other cranial bones. Features are Greater & Lesser wings, Oribital surface, Sinus, Dorsum sella, Hypophyseal fossa, Sella turcica. |
