Contraindicationshypersensitivity, Lactation, concurrent use of atazanavir or nelfinavir. OB: use only if clearly needed.
Side EffectsPSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS (others include: abd pain, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, flatulence, nausea)
Interactionsmay decrease levels of atazanavir/nelfinvir, may increase levels and risk of toxicity of saquinavir, may increase risk of bleeding with warfarin, hypomagnesaemia increase risk of digoxin toxicity
Adult Oral Dose20mg or 40mg once daily for 4-8 weeks
Nsg Implicationsassess routinely for epigastric or abd pain and frank or occult blood in the stool, emesis, or gastric aspirate. Monitor bowel function/ report diarrhea, abd cramping, fever, and blood stools
Pt Teachingadminister at least 1 hr before meals. Capsules should be swallowed whole, take med as directed for the full course even if better, take missed doses as soon as remembered but not if time for next dose, do not double doses, read pt info sheet prior to starting therapy in case of any changes, avoid ETOH, products containing aspirin or NSAIDS and foods that cause GI irritation, report black tarry stools, diarrhea, abd pain, persistent h/a, report signs of hypomagnesaemia (seizures, dizziness, abnormal heart beat, ect)
