Use:treatment of diarrhea
Contraindications:hypersensitivity; sever liver disease. Infectious diarrhea; colitis, dehydrated pts.
Side Effects:dizziness, confusion, tachycardia, constipated, N/V, urinary rentention
Interactions:additive CNS depression with other CNS depressants; alcohol, antihistamines, opoids, analgesics, and sedative hypnotics
Route/Dosage:(Adults) PO 5 mg 3-4 times a day intially, then 5 mg once daily as needed. Do not exceed 20 mg/ day. (2.5mg diphenoxylate with 0.025mg of atropine)
Nursing Implications:Assess frequency/consistency of stool & bowel sounds prior and during therapy. Assess pt fluid * electrolyte balance, skin turgor for dehydration. Liver function tests
Patient Teaching:take as ordered, contact HCP if diarrhea persists, fever occurs, abd pain or palpatations. May cause drowsiness. Promote good oral hygiene.
