| Nursing Implications | 1. Assess patient routinely for abdominal pain and frank or occult blood in the stool. 2. Administer on an empty stomach 1 hour before meals and bedtime. 3. Tablets may be broken or dissolved in water. 4. Shake well before administering |
| Patient Teaching | 1. Advise patient to take medications for 4-8 weeks, even if feeling better. 2. If dose is missed, take when remembering unless close to next dose. 3. Do not double dose. 4. Increased fluid intake, dietary bulk, and exercise prevents constipation. 5. Teach patient to follow-up with routine exams to monitor progress |
