| PT teaching | advise pt that laxatives should only be used short term, long-term use can cause electrolyte imbalance and dependence, encourage PT to use other forms of bowel regulation ie. increase bulk in diet, increase fluids 6-8 lgasses a day, increase mobility, instruct pt with cardiac disease to avoid straining during BM, advise PT not to use laxative with abd pain, N&V, or if fever is present, advise PT not to take dulcosate within 2 hours of other laxatives |
