8th grade Sewing Terms

Since 8th graders have the unique experience of sewing a piece of clothing they have unique sewing terms to know as well.

NotchesDiamond shapes used to match fabric pieces together
Raw EdgeThe edge of the material that "unravels"
SeamTwo pieces of fabric sewn together form this.
SelvagePerfect edge of fabric that will never unravel
LayoutThe arrangement of pattern piece put on fabric and pinned down before you cut it.
CasingMaterial edge, folded and sewn closing to form a holder for elastic or cords.
TrimTo cut away the unneeded fabric on a seam allowance.
PinsUsed to hold material or patterns onto fabric.
PatternFormal paper pieces used to cut into shaped pieces needed for a project.
GrainlineLong arrowed line on pattern piece used to align with selvage to be straight during layout.
Right SideHighly colored side of fabric
Wrong SideDull side of fabric
Seam AllowanceUsing the 15 line all through a project, keeping it consistent.
HemThe folded bottom edge of pants, shorts, sleeves or skirts to "seal" the raw edge.
Pinking ShearsUsed to remove half of the seam allowance, making them neat, keep them from unravelling.
Seam RipperTool used to remove sewing mistakes.
NeedleWhether by hand or machine, this is what does the "sewing"
Inner SeamsThe lines of sewing that run along your inner thigh.
Center SeamThe seam that runs down from your belly button, into the crotch and up your rear end to your lower back. Joins your two legs together!
Side SeamThe lines of sewing that run down from your waist to your outer thigh, knee or ankle (depending on what your wearing!)
