The Potsdam ConferenceFinal wartime conference between the "Big Three." Stalin got control over Eastern Europe - He doesn't want free elections - He wants Communism. *Truman wants free elections all across Europe - U.S. economy after WWII is #1 in the world - He wants to expand U.S. economy into eastern Europe.
Iron CurtainMap on page 605. A phrase that stood for the division on Europe. Stalin installed communist governments in Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland - These countries were known as Soviet "Satellite Nations."
United State's Policy of ContainmentTruman wants to stop "babying the Soviets." Takes measures to prevent the spread of Communism to any other countries. This policy began to guide the Truman administration foreign policy. * Europe is divided into 2 political regions
The Truman Doctrine1947-1950. Truman asked Congress for $400 million for economic aid to Greece and Turkey. This was solely to prevent the spread of Communism and send a message to Stalin
The Marshall Plan1947. Most western European countries were ruined after the war. Secretary of State George Marshall proposed to provide aid to all European nations. The U.S. was "against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos." 16b countries received $13 billion in aid.
The Berlin AirliftStalin created a blockade between east and west Germany. American and British officials started to fly food and supplies into west Berlin, Germany. 277,000 flights brought 2.3 million tons of supplies for 327 days. *Delivered food, fuel, medicine, Christmas presents. West Berlin survived because of the airlift.
NATO AllianceNorth Atlantic Treaty Organization. 10 western European countries joined in a defensive military alliance with the U.S. and Canada. *1st time the U.S. entered into a military alliance during peacetime. * The Berlin blockade increased western European fear of Soviet aggression.
