AB
AcrocyanosisBlueness of the hands and feet, usually due to inadequate circulation
APGARAn objective score of the condition of a baby after birth. An Apgar score of 0-3 at 20 minutes of age is predictive of high morbidity (disease) and mortality (death). The Apgar score is a number arrived at by scoring the heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, skin color, and response to a catheter in the nostril. Each of these objective signs can receive 0, 1, or 2 points. Perfect score is 10
Caput succedaneumThe swelling of the scalp in a newborn. It is most often brought on by pressure from the uterus or vaginal wall during a head-first (vertex) delivery. Caput crosses the suture lines.
CircumcisionA surgery to remove the foreskin, a fold of skin that covers and protects the rounded tip (glans) of the penis
Colostrum:A sticky white or yellow fluid secreted by the breasts during the second half of pregnancy and for a few days after birth, before breast milk comes in. It is high in protective antibodies that boost the newborn's immune system.
CryptorchidismA condition in which one or both testicles fail to move from the abdomen, where they develop before birth, down into the scrotum
Cephalohaematomahemorrhage of blood between the skull and the periosteum of a newborn baby. Its’ a collection of blood underneath the scalp. It does not cross the suture lines.
FontanellesThe "soft spot" of the newborn's skull. (Anterior and posterior)
GynecomastiaThe enlargement of the gland tissue of the male breast.
Harlequin signReddening of the lower half of the laterally recumbent body and blanching of theupper half, due to temporary vasomotor disturbance in newborn infants
JaundiceA yellowish discoloration of the mucous membranes, whites of the eyes, and skin. In newborns is yellowing of the skin due to excessive bilirubin
LanugoDowny hair on the body of a fetus or newborn baby. It is the first hair to be produced by the fetal hair follicles
MeconiumDark, sticky material that is normally present in the intestine at birth and passed in the feces after birth, after trypsin and other enzymes
MiliaTiny white spots on a newborn's face and gums during the first week
Narcosisdrowsiness newborn from a narcotic mother received
PhototherapyTreatment with light to treat hyperbilirubinemia
Physiologic jaundiceThe type seen in most newborns -- does not require treatment
PolydactylyMore than the normal number of fingers or toes.
PseudomenstruationNewborn vaginal discharge in newborn due to mother's hormones. Uterine bleeding without the typical premenstrual endometrial changes
SyndactylyA condition in which fingers or toes are joined together
Vernix caseosaA white cheesy substance that covers and protects the skin of the fetus and is still all over the skin of a baby at birth
