| Acrocyanosis | Blueness of the hands and feet, usually due to inadequate circulation |
| APGAR | An objective score of the condition of a baby after birth. An Apgar score of 0-3 at 20 minutes of age is predictive of high morbidity (disease) and mortality (death). The Apgar score is a number arrived at by scoring the heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, skin color, and response to a catheter in the nostril. Each of these objective signs can receive 0, 1, or 2 points. Perfect score is 10 |
| Caput succedaneum | The swelling of the scalp in a newborn. It is most often brought on by pressure from the uterus or vaginal wall during a head-first (vertex) delivery. Caput crosses the suture lines. |
| Circumcision | A surgery to remove the foreskin, a fold of skin that covers and protects the rounded tip (glans) of the penis |
| Colostrum: | A sticky white or yellow fluid secreted by the breasts during the second half of pregnancy and for a few days after birth, before breast milk comes in. It is high in protective antibodies that boost the newborn's immune system. |
| Cryptorchidism | A condition in which one or both testicles fail to move from the abdomen, where they develop before birth, down into the scrotum |
| Cephalohaematoma | hemorrhage of blood between the skull and the periosteum of a newborn baby. Its’ a collection of blood underneath the scalp. It does not cross the suture lines. |
| Fontanelles | The "soft spot" of the newborn's skull. (Anterior and posterior) |
| Gynecomastia | The enlargement of the gland tissue of the male breast. |
| Harlequin sign | Reddening of the lower half of the laterally recumbent body and blanching of theupper half, due to temporary vasomotor disturbance in newborn infants |
| Jaundice | A yellowish discoloration of the mucous membranes, whites of the eyes, and skin. In newborns is yellowing of the skin due to excessive bilirubin |
| Lanugo | Downy hair on the body of a fetus or newborn baby. It is the first hair to be produced by the fetal hair follicles |
| Meconium | Dark, sticky material that is normally present in the intestine at birth and passed in the feces after birth, after trypsin and other enzymes |
| Milia | Tiny white spots on a newborn's face and gums during the first week |
| Narcosis | drowsiness newborn from a narcotic mother received |
| Phototherapy | Treatment with light to treat hyperbilirubinemia |
| Physiologic jaundice | The type seen in most newborns -- does not require treatment |
| Polydactyly | More than the normal number of fingers or toes. |
| Pseudomenstruation | Newborn vaginal discharge in newborn due to mother's hormones. Uterine bleeding without the typical premenstrual endometrial changes |

| Vernix caseosa | A white cheesy substance that covers and protects the skin of the fetus and is still all over the skin of a baby at birth |
