| Rise | The amount of climb a roof rises per foot of run. |

| Soffit | The underside of the overhang on the roof which is usually vented. |
| Rake trim | The angled trim board on the gable end of a building. |
| Ridge | The uppermost area of two intersecting roof planes, also known to as the peak. |
| Valley | The internal corner formed by the intersection of two roof planes. |
| Ventilation | Circulation of air through the roof area to prevent condensation from occurring in the attic |
| Flashing | Additional covering used over a roof joint or hole through the roof to provide complete waterproofing. |
| Step Flashing | Small pieces of aluminum folded and placed on each course of shingles to prevent a leak at the intersection of a roof with a wall. |
| Truss | A manufactured triangle that is used to support the roof in place of traditional rafters |
| Gusset | Plates used to fasten the members that make up a truss. |
| Rafter | The inclined structural member of a roof system designed to support the roof load. |
| Bird?s mouth | The notch cut into a rafter to accommodate the top plate of the wall. The material that is removed resembles a bird?s beak. |
| Plumb cut | The angle cut at the end of the rafter that is vertical when the rafter is nailed to the top plate. |
| Sheathing/ decking | The 4?x8? sheets of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) used to cover the roof. |
| Square | The unit that roofing material is sold by enough material to cover 100 square feet. |
