AB
PDF (Portable Document Format)A file format designed to enable printing and viewing of documents with all their formatting (typefaces, images, layouts, etc.) appearing the same regardless of what operating system is used, so a PDF document should look the same on Windows, Macintosh, Unix, Linux, OS/2, etc.
IPN (Internet Protocol Number)Also called an IP Address. A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots: 165.133.245.2 Every machine that is on the Internet has a unique IP number. If a machine does not have an IP#, it is not really on the Internet.
FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)Documents that list and answer the most common questions on a particular subject. Usually created by people who are tired of answering the same question over and over.
CyberpunkA cultural label encompassing many different kinds of human, machine, and punk attitudes originally evolving from a cultural sub-genre of science fiction and adapting into the Internet.
AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format - .aif)Originally developed for Macintosh, .aif files provide high quality audio for the Internet.
WAVE Audio (.wav)The audio sounds your PC produces when you perform standard functions such as empty the trashcan, load and unload windows, etc.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), .JPGThe most common format for image (“photographic”) files.
GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)A common format for image files, especially suitable for images containing large areas of the same color. Used mainly for line art or simple logo art. These graphics are limited to 256 colors.
EthernetA very common method of networking computers in a LAN (Local Area Network) and larger networks using cables to connect computers, printers and other devices that share resources.
BroadbandGenerally refers to connections to the Internet with much greater bandwidth than you can get with a modem. There is no specific definition of the speed of a “broadband” connection but in general, any Internet connection using DSL or Cable may be considered a broadband connection.
BandwidthHow much stuff that can be sent through a network connection. Usually measured in bits-per-second (bps).
BaudThe baud rate of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second.
Megabyte (mb)1024 kilobytes or a million bytes of storage space
Gigabyte (gb)1000 megabytes of storage space
Terabyte (tb)1000 gigabytes of storage space
BitA single digit number in base-2, either a 1 (on) or a 0 (off). The smallest unit of computerized data. Bandwidths are usually measured in bits-per-second.
ByteA set of Bits that represent a single character. Usually there are 8 Bits in a Byte.
Kilobyte (kb)1000 bytes of storage space.
Open Source SoftwareSoftware for which the underlying programming code is available to the users so that they may read it, make changes to it, and build new versions of the software incorporating their changes.
TerminalA workstation usually containing a keyboard and a monitor that is networked to a computer (server) somewhere else.
NodeAny single computer connected to a network.
NetizenDerived from the term citizen, referring to a citizen of the Internet, or someone who uses networked resources. The term connotes civic responsibility and participation or “Netiquette” (AKA: computer etiquette).
NetiquetteExpected etiquette on the Internet such as civic responsibility and participation.
MosaicThe first WWW browser that was available for the Mac, Windows, and UNIX all with the same interface. Mosaic really started the popularity of the Web
Meta TagA specific kind of HTML tag that contains information about the page itself for search engines to help them better categorize the page (“meta” means “about this subject”). Meta Tags are located in the head section of a web page.
JavaScriptA programming language that is mostly used in web page design, usually to add features that make the web page more interactive.
