ContrastPrinciple of design that refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (value-light vs. dark colors, textures-rough vs. smooth, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a design so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama. Unique elements in a design should stand apart from one another.
EmphasisPrinciple of design that simplifies the reader’s task and helps him or her pick out the most important points of information in your message. The most important element on the page should be the most prominent – Make it stand out!!!
BalancePrinciple of design that the visual weights of all of the elements are equally distributed throughout the layout/design.
Symmetrical BalaneA design (or composition) with identical or nearly identical form on opposite sides of a vertical dividing line or central axis.
Asymmetrical BalanceA design (or composition) typically created with an odd or mismatched number of differing elements that evenly distributes the visual weight of the elements within the composition.
RepetitionPrinciple of design of reusing the same or similar elements throughout a design.
AlignmentPrinciple of design that creates a strong visual connection between elements by lining up the edges or axes of the elements with each other within a design and dramatically improves the organization and professional appearance of a design.
UnityPrinciple of design that is achieved when all of the separate elements on a page look as if they belong together.
FlowPrinciple of design that will visually lead the reader from one element to another element in the layout, carefully presenting information to the reader.
