Microsoft - Common Terms

These terms are used in all Microsoft Applications and with the Windows operating system.

Clock DateSets & displays date & time on computer
CloseCloses the application
DesktopComputer display area that has similar types of objects that a real desk would have: files, documents, reference sources
Dialog Box LauncherOpens the window which allows the user to enter info to tell the computer what to do & how to do it
HelpUsers in need of assistance can use this ________ menu in Windows applications
IconsPictures on the screen or toolbar that represent various commands, files, or folders.
Internet ExplorerA web browser created by Microsoft for the purposes of accessing the internet
IP AddressThe very specific Internet Protocol address that identifies individual computers
Maximize/RestoreEnlarges a window to fill the entire desktop
MenuA list of options from which a command can be made, often has keyboard shortcuts
MinimizeReduces a window to a button on the taskbar
Notification AreaLocated in the bottom right corner of the desktop, on the taskbar, this area contains the clock and icons indicating active
Office ButtonLocated in the top left corner of a Microsoft application, click for a drop-down menu
Quick Access ToolbarLocated at the top left corner of a Microsoft application, this is a toolbar with frequently used tools
Recycle BinDeleted files are moved here before permanently discarding
RibbonFormerly found on toolbars, this is an area at the top of 2007 Microsoft applications that contains tools for formatting
“Safely Remove”Found in the Notification Area, this icon (when clicked) allows you to remove the flash drive without losing data
SaveAfter saving a file once to the location, and with the name, you can click this icon to save a document without a dialog box opening
Save AsWhen ready to save for the first time, or to give a saved file a different location or name, click this option
Scroll ArrowsLocated at the right and across the bottom of a window, with an arrow at each end, use the arrows to move all or part of a display image to view
Scroll BarLocated at the right and across the bottom of a window, with an arrow at each end, use the long bar to move all or part of a display image to view
Start ButtonLocated on the bottom left side of the desktop, this button allows users to access programs as well as tasks including the Control Panel & Windows Explorer
Status BarBar at the bottom of a window that displays info about a command, operation, or location of the insertion point. Rest the mouse over an item to see the name of the tool, or double click the item to turn it on or off
SubmenuIndicated by an arrow inside a menu, the submenu allow further options to be selected.
Task BarUsually found across the bottom of the desktop, which contains all available windows, the Start button, and Notification Area.
VolumeIcon in the Notification Area that allows the user to change the volume or mute the sound on the computer
Window BordersThe outside frame of a window used to resize the window
ZoomA toolbar button that allows the user ot reduce or enlarge the display of the active document on the screen
