A | B |
Cell Membrane | "Gatekeeper;" Phospholipid bilayer which regulates what enters & leaves the cell |
Cell Wall | Found in plant cells (and fungi, bacteria, and some protists); provides support & protection |
Nucleus | "Control center;" Contains the DNA; Found only in Eukaryotes |
Nuclear Envelope | Surrounds the nucleus; regulates what enters & leaves nucleus |
Nuclear Pore | Opening in nuclear envelope that allows materials in or out of nucleus |
Nucleolus | Dark region inside nucleus; produces ribosomes |
Chromosome | Located in nucleus; contains DNA mixed with special proteins |
Cytoplasm | Space between the nucleus and the cell membrane |
Cytosol | Jelly-like fluid that fills the cell |
Mitochondrion | "Power plant;" Produces ATP energy by breaking down food molecules (cellular respiration) |
Chloroplast | Green organelle where photosynthesis produces food (chemical energy) for a plant |
Ribosome | Site of protein production in cells; may be "free-floating" or bound to the rough ER |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Ribosomes cover outer surface; helps produce & transport proteins that will be shipped out of the cell; produces new membrane |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | No proteins located on outer surface; produces lipids; helps with detoxification; stores calcium ions for muscle contraction |
Golgi Apparatus | "Shipping center;" Packages, modifies, and ships materials received from the ER; produces lysosomes and transport vesicles |
Lysosome | "Clean-up crew;" Breaks down wastes and old organelles in the cell; Helps digest food; Destroys invaders such as bacteria; may kill entire cell through process known as apoptosis |
Central Vacuole | "Storage tank;" Stores food, water, and other materials in plant cells; Puts pressure on plant cell walls to keep cell strong; performs lysosomal functions |
Cytoskeleton | "Framework" of the cell; Consists of microtubules, intermediate filaments, and microfilaments; Gives the cell shape and structure; Helps the cell to move |
Cilia | Numerous short hairs on a cell; Help the cell to move |
Flagella | One long hair on a cell; Helps the cell to move |
