| Nonfiction | A book written about real events, people, places or things. All the information is based on true facts and not made up. Biographies and autobiographies are part of this genre. |
| Fiction | A story about events, people, places or things that aren’t real or didn’t happen. |
| Autobiography | A book written by an individual about his/her own life. |
| Biography | A book written about a real person’s life that is written by another person. |
| Realistic Fiction | A story that could happen to people and animals, but hasn’t happened. A story using made-up characters that takes place in modern time. |
| Historical Fiction | A realistic fiction story, with fictional characters and events, set in a real past or during a historical time. |
| Fantasy | A story that cannot happen in the real world. In these stories, animals talk, magical powers, inanimate objects come to life (ex: stuffed animals), imaginary worlds exist and are lived in, future worlds are explored, and/or people are giants or thumb-sized. |
| Science Fiction | A story that could happen, but hasn’t, and is based on real scientific facts and ideas. Science and technology play an important role in the story. |
| Classic | An entertaining fictitious story between 75-100 years old. |
| Informational Text | Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics (ex: sports, animals, science, history, careers, travel, geography, space, weather, etc.) This type of genre does not contain literary elements: setting, characters, and plot. |
