Server | A computer connected to the internet. It stores websites and serves information to clients. |
IP Address | Internet Protocol Address. A unique identifier assigned to every device connected to the internet. |
Client | A computer that accesses information on a server. |
ISP | Internet Service Provider. A company who provides access to the internet. |
Router | Directs packets around the internet. |
Packets | Small pieces of information traveling around the internet. |
Browser | Software which allows you to view websites. |
Surfing | Clicking links and going to various websites on the internet. |
Web Homepage | The main page of a website. It contains links to other pages on the site. |
HTML | Hypertext Markup Language. The language used to create websites. |
HTTP | Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The set of standards used to transfer webpages acrosss the internet. |
Hit | When you connect to a webpage. |
Hyperlink | A link in a document that transfers you somewhere else. |
Web 2.0 | Provides the ability for users to modify the content of a webpage. (wikis, blogs, etc) |
Cookie | A small text file that websites put on your computer to store information about you and your perferences. |
Browser Homepage | The first page that comes up when you open your browser. You can change it if you want. |
URL | Uniform Resource Locator. The "address" of a website. It contains the protocol and the domain name. It can also include a path and filename. |
Digital Literacy | Being able to find, understand and use the resources on an electronic device. |
Search Engine | Software which creates a database of websites, which is searched using keywords. |
Phrase search | Using quotation marks to limit a search to a specific phrase. |
Metasearch engine | A search engine that searches and compiles the information from other search engines. |
Boolean Operators | And, Or, NOT. They are used to refine and filter and search. |
