PhotosynthesisThe process in plants and some other organisms where the energy in sunlight is captured and used to make food. In autotrophs.
ParasiteAn organism that lives on or in a host and causes harm to the host.
AutotrophAn organism that makes its own food. Makes food usually by Photosynthesis.
HeterotrophAn organism that cannot make its own food; must take in food (eat).
MotilityThe ability to move around spontaneously. Cilia, flagella, pseudopods are forms of motility in Protists.
CiliaTiny hairlike extensions on the outside of a cell that move together in a sweeping motion.
PseudopodA temporary bulge of cytoplasm used for feeding and movement in protists. A “false-foot”.
ChlorophyllGreen pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants as well as in algae.
Eye SpotA small, light-sensitive patch of pigment in certain algae.
FlagellumA long, whiplike structure used for movement. Flagella (plural) Flagellum (singular)
ProtistA eukaryotic organism that cannot be classified as an animal, plant, or fungus. “Eukaryotic” means they have a nucleus.
