Weather and Climate Unit (Part 1)

Flashcards, matching, concentration, word search

AB
Air MassA large region of the atmosphere where the air has similar properties throughout.
AnemometerA weather instrument that measures wind speed.
BarometerA weather instrument that measures air pressure.
ClimateThe average weather pattern of a region (weather data collected over time).
CondensationThe changing of water from a gas to a liquid in the water cycle.
Convection CellA circular pattern of air rising, air sinking, and wind.
Cumulonimbus CloudA tall cloud that produces severe weather.
DroughtA long period when an area does not receive enough precipitation to support plant growth.
El NiñoA temporary heating of the Pacific Ocean near the equator. A strong El Niño causes wet winters in the Southeastern US.
FogA cloud at ground level.
Gulf StreamA warm ocean convection current, moving northeastwards from the Gulf of Mexico along the Atlantic Coast of the US. The Gulf stream moderates weather along the eastern seaboard, warming the air and land there during the cooler months.
HumidityThe amount of water vapor in the air.
InsolationThe amount of the sun’s energy that reaches the Earth at any given time.
Jet streamA strong band of winds moving from the west to the east, which affects the formation of weather fronts.
Land BreezeWind that blows from the land to the sea.
LongitudeImaginary lines on Earth that show how far east or west a location is from the Prime Meridian.
Relative HumidityA comparison between how much water vapor is in the air and how much the air could hold.
Sea BreezeWind that blows from the sea to the land.
Storm SurgeA great rise of the water along a shore caused by low air pressure, seen when hurricanes come close to land.
ThunderstormThe most common sever storm, formed by a cumulonimbus cloud.
TranspirationThe process of plants losing moisture through evaporation. This evaporated water enters the water cycle.
Types of precipitationRain; Snow; Sleet; Hail.
Snowprecipitation that grows as ice crystals because of low temperatures in the air and on the ground
Haildroplets of water that fall and rise over and over, freezing more layers of ice with each rise and fall
Water currentsThe Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, and El Niño and La Niña in the Pacific Ocean. These water currents affect the formation of weather fronts.
Water VaporWater that is in the air in the form of a gas.
WesterliesGlobal winds existing between 30 and 60 degrees latitude that blow from west to east.
Wind DirectionThe direction wind is moving.
Wind VaneA weather instrument that measures wind direction.
