Neuropsychology: Brain

Brain parts

AB
Hypothalamusinvolved in regulating organism's homeostasis. Has role in many motivated behaviors: sleep, drink, sex, aggr, maternal, appetite, emotions, temp.
Cerebral Cortexcovers entire brain, 2 hemispheres, bilaterally symmetrical, mediates most higher cog processes. 4 lobes: Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital.
ThalamusCentral switching station for sensory info to cortex, comm's betw diff cortical regions, & cortex and subcortical regions. No smell.
AmygdalaSubstructure of the limbic sx, involved in control of emo. activities, attachment of emotions to sensory stimuli
Basal Gangliagroup of midbrain structures involved in muscle tone and motor coordination & posture. Pt. of extrapyramidal motor sx.
CerebellumBrain center, involved in coord. of mvmts of diff. pts of the body; involved in coord'ing well-learned fine motor movements
Corpus CallosumBundle of nerve fibres that connect the l and r cerebral hemispheres.
Frontal Lobelobe of cerebral hemisphere, contains the motor cortex and is involved w/expressive lang and variety of motivational & personality functions
Limbic SystemIntegrated sx of mid & lower brain centers involving the organisms basic emotional & motivations life. Includes: amygdala, septum & hippocampus
MedullaHindbrain str involved in mediation of vital autonomic activites: heart rate, bp, respiration
Occitital LobeLobe of cerebral cortex containing visual cortex
Temporal Lobelobe in cerebral cortex that contains auditory cortex assoc'd w/ receptive lang, emotion & memory
Parietal Lobelobe of cerebral cortex, contains somatosensory cortex, involved in processing sensations (pain, temp, kinesthesia...) coording these with visual & other sensory stimuli. Damage: complex sensory/motor abnormalities that pt.s deny deficit in.
HippocampusIn limbic sx, plays impt role in transferring information from short term - long term memory.
Broca's AreaRegion in frontal pt of L hemisphere responsible for speech production. Damage: slow, laborious, non-fluent speech "expressive aphasia."
Wernicke's AreaRegion in L temporal lobe involved in understanding speech. Damage; receptive or fluent speech apahsias. Speech is devoid of meaning, person isn't aware of problem.
Reticulating Activating System (RAS)System of undifferentiated neurons extending throughout the brain, responsible for functions related to brain arousal, sleep, filtering stimuli, selective attention.
Brain TumorSpecific location depends on tumor locations; sx: HA, siezures, focal neurological signs.
Left HemisphereControls motor & sensory functions on R side of body. Specialized for verbal activities.
Right HemisphereControls motor & sensory functions on L side of body. Specialized for spatial activities.
StorkeNeurological impairment due to sudden interference of blood flow to brain. Sx depend on area of brain affected.
Kluver-Bucy Syndromecamage or removal of portions of temp. lobe & subcortical areas: decr recog of people, loss of fear and rage reaction, increase sex, mem. deficits.
