AB
Nervous SystemThe body's command system; communicates information throughout the body and controls the body's response to stimuli
StimulusAny change or signal in the internal or external environment that can make an organism react.
NeuronCells that carry information through your nervous system.
ReceptorLocation where a stimulus is picked up.
Sensory NeuronType of neuron that picks up stimuli from the internal or external environment through sensory organs.
InterneuronType of neuron that interprets a nerve impulse and creates a response for it. (brain & spinal cord)
Motor NeuronType of neuron that sends out impulses to the muscles resulting in a response to a stimuli.
Nerve ImpulseMessage that a neuron carries.
SynapseSpace that separates the axon terminal of one neuron and the dendrite of the neighboring neuron.
Spinal CordPart of the nervous system that connects the brain with the rest of the nervous system
ReflexAutomatic response that occurs very rapidly and without conscious control.
Central Nervous SystemThe largest part of the nervous system, consists of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous SystemConnects the brain and spinal cord with the rest of the body
NeurotransmitterChemical signals that jump over the synapse between neurons.
NerveBundle of nerve fibers.
Somatic Nervous SystemDivision of the nervous system that controls voluntary actions (jogging)
Autonomic Nervous SystemDivision of the nervous system that controls involuntary actions (breathing & digestion)
CerebrumThe largest part of the brain that controls thinking, communicating and learning.
CerebellumControls balance and coordination, "little brain".
Brain StemPart of the brain that controls involuntary actions; breathing, digestion, and blood pressure
