She is Jewish, so in the summer when everyone else is at the Christian Church summer camps, she doesn't have anyone to play with or do anything with. She loves spending time with her grandparents in Memphis and talking with Ruth and her little sister, Sharon. |
who said this? "If there were no mirrors or mothers, I probably never would know how ugly I am." | Patty said this about how her mother makes her feel. |
Ruth | She is the Bergen's maid, housekeeper & nanny. She has the kids say a Christian blessing before they eat their meals, so Patty worries that her dad will find out and start yelling and cussing about Christian prayers in his house! He ignores Patty or is unkind to her. |
Frederick Anton Reiker | He is a German POW about 20-22 yearls old that has been captured by the Americans in Europe. Before he had to join the Army, he was in medical school. He is from Gottingen, Germany and he speaks perfect English. His father is a history Professor at the University of Gottingen. He buys pencils, 3 pads of paper & a pocket pencil sharpener, and a fake diamond brooch for a dollar. He acts really nice to Patty, so Patty thinks he would make a good friend, and she starts getting a crush on him. |
Sharon Bergen | 5 hears, 10 months old; She is Patty's younger sister and the favorite daughter of the Bergens. She says to her mom "Buzz, buzz, the bee is on you mommy. April Fools!" Her mom laughs and tolrates it, but when her mom tires of it, she says to Patty to amuse Sharon. Sharon looks just like her mother, and her mother claims that Sharon was just like her when she was little, and she is never a moment of bother. |
Mary Wren | She is the telephone operator who is a gossip. She put Patty's hand down when Patty started to wave at the German POW's as they were getting off of the train. |

He requested a special gas ration to be able to go say Jewish prayers at the Beth Zion Synagogue in Memphis, but he didn't get the rations car. Before he married into Pearl's rich family, he was a ticket seller at Union Station in Memphis. "He can be very nice to other people." says Patty. |
Pearl Bergen | She is Patty's mother and she always complains that Patty never combs her hair or tries to look nice. She pay $5 to get her hair done and talks a chubby farm lady into buying a dress and hat. She said, "Patricia doesn't care how she looks. Sharon is just like me." She gets really mad when she finds out that her dad's company is sending her 2 borthers and their wivves to New York City for an insurrance meeting. Pearl said, "Don't I count for anything? Don't I deserve something nice too?" Pearl is beautiful, but she says mean things to Patty like, "Why cant' you ever try to dress nice?" |
