Renaissance | Period of time in European history when people became interested again in art & learning. A revival of learning – in art, literature, & science. Means “rebirth”. |
Patron | Someone who gives money to artists so they can continue their work and supports the arts. |
Italian City States | During the Renaissance Italy was a collection of city states each with its own ruler: Venice, Florence, Milan, Genoa, Ferrara, Bologna, Turin, Naples, Rome. |
Humanism | A way of thinking about people and their place in the world. Was a balance between religious FAITH (from the heart) & REASON (from the brain). |
Plague | A widespread epidemic that originated in Asia and spread through Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries killing a third of the population. |
Urban | Relating to or living in a city. |
Rural | Found in or living in the country. |
Predestination | A religious belief that God has already decided who will go to heaven. |
Secular | Related to worldly things, not matters of the church or religion. |
Indulgence | Paying to have your sins forgiven or cancelling the punishment for sin. |
Huguenots | Members of the Protestant Reformed Church of France during the 16th and 17th centuries. |

Scientific Revolution | A time when great strides were made in science and math in Europe from 1550-1700. |

Leonardo da Vinci | He was a scientist, artist, inventor, and engineer. He was the original “Renaissance man.” Known for The Mona Lisa & The Last Supper. |
Michelangelo | He was one of the great artists of the Renaissance. His most famous work is the painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. |
William Shakespeare | He was one of the worlds greatest writers and playwrights. Two of his most famous plays are Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. |
Martin Luther | He wrote the 95 Theses, starting the Protestant Reformation, and a time when people began to question the church. |
John Calvin | Spread the Protestant Church in France. |
Henry VIII | He broke away from Catholic Church & started the Church of England. |
Copernicus | Proved that sun is the center of the universe and the earth and the other planets revolve around it. |
Heliocentric Theory | Sun is the center of the universe & earth and the other planets revolve around it. |
Galileo | Proved Copernicus’ theory using a telescope. This went against the teachings of the Catholic Church. |
Reformation | A religious & political movement that began as an attempt to reform the Catholic Church. It resulted in the establishment of the Protestant churches. |
