Unit 7 Vocabulary Part 1: Cell Divison

Please practice this for at least 10 minutes.

AB
ChromatinLoosely packed DNA
ChromosomeTightly packed DNA
ChromatidOne of two identical "sister" parts of a replicated chromosome
Homologous ChromosomeA term used to refer to a chromosomes that have the same genes in the same locations but different versions of those genes.
DiploidA cell that has two copies of each type of chromosome
Binary FissionThe way a bacteria (prokaryotic cell) reproduces
InterphaseA stage of the cell cycle when the cell is growing and copying it's DNA
Gap 1 (G1)The first step in interphase, cell growth is occuring
S-phaseThe second stage of Interphase, DNA replication is occuring
Gap 2 (G2)The third stage of interphase, cell growth is occuring
Mitotic PhaseA stage of the cell cycle when the cell (both the cytoplasm and nucleus) is actively dividing
MitosisThe division of the nucleus
ProphaseThe first step of Mitosis, the DNA is condensing into visible chromosomes
MetaphaseThe second step of Mitosis, the chromosomes line up down the center of the cell
AnaphaseThe third step of Mitosis the sister chromatids seperate and move to opposite sides of the cell
Telophasethe last step of Mitosis, two nuclei are beginning to re-form
CytokinesisThe division of the cytoplasm
Cleavage furrowThe indentation that forms to split animal cells into 2
Cell plateThe cell wall that forms to divide 2 plant cells
