UseShort term management of duodenal ulcers. Aluminium salt of sulfated sucrose reacts w/ gastric acid to form a thick paste, which selectively adheres to the ulcer surface.
ContraindicationsHypersensitivity, renal failure, diabetes, impaired swallowing.
Side Effectsdizziness, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, pruitus, anaphylaxis.
Interactionsmay decrease absorption of phenytoin, fat soluble vitamins, or tetracycline. decrease effectiveness when used with antacids, cimetidine, or ranitidine. decrease absorption of fluoroquinolones.
DosagePO: (Adults) 1 g twice daily, given 1hr before a meal (gastroesophageal reflux) PO (adults) 1g 4xdaily given 1 hr before meals and at bedtime (unlabeled)
Nursing ImplicationsAssess Pt. routinely for abd pain and frank or occult blood in the stool.
