ContraindicationsConcurrent use of atazanavir and nelfanair. Use cautiously in severe hepatic impairment & patients using high dosage for >1 year.
Side EffectsHeadache, psuedomembranous colitis, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, hypomagnesia, bone fracture.
InteractionsMay decrease levels f atazonavir and nelfanair. May increase levels of toxicity of saquinavir, may increase risk of bleeding with warfarin.
Dosage20mg, 40mg, 10mg, 5mg
Nursing ImplicationsAssess for epigastric or abdominal pain and occult blood in stool, emesis or gastric aspirate. Monitor bowel function. May cause increase in serum creatine, bilirubin, potassium & serum sodium. May alter hemoglobin, WBC, platelets. May cause hypomagnemia
TeachingTake as directed, avoid alcohol products and products that contain aspirin or NSAIDS, and foods that may cause an increase in GI irritation. Report black tarry stools, diarrhea, abdominal pain or persistent headache.
