UsePrevention of gastric mucosal injury from NSAIDs + aspirin. Mifepristone for termination of pregnancy. Treatment of duodenal ulcers. Cervical ripening + labor induction
ContraindicationsHypersensitivity to prostaglandins. May cause sever diahrrhea in NSG infants. Shouldnt be used to prevent NSAIDs-induced gastric injury. *When used for cervical ripening, may cause uterine rupture*
Side EffectsH/A, ABD pain, diarrhea, constipation, dyspepsia,, flatulence, NV, miscarriage, menstrual disorders
InteractionsIncrease r/o diarrhea c magnesium-containing antiacids
DosagePo(antiulcers) 200 mcg 4xdaily with or after meals and @ bedtime or 400 MCG 2xdaily w/ last dose @ bedtime. if intolerance occurs may decrease to 100 mcg 4xdaily. (termination of pregnancy) 400 mcg single dose 2days after mifepristone if abortion has not occurred.... Intravaginally 25 mcg (1/4 of 100-mcg tab) may repeat q3-6hrs
Nursing ImplicationsAsses for epigastric or ABD pain + frank/ occult blood in stool emesis, gastric aspirate. Monitor uterine cramping + cramping + bleeding. Asses dilation of cervix periodically
TeachingDont Share Misoprostol. Can cause spontaneous abortion. Diarrhea can occur. Avoid Alcohol + irritating foods.
