Maalox - Antacid
Binds phosphate in the GI tract. Neutralizes gastric acid and inactivates pepsin.

| Contraindications | In severe abdominal pain with an unknown cause. Caution in hypercalcemia, and hypophosphatemia |
| Side Effects | Constipation and hypophosphatemia |
| Interactions | Decreases absorption of tetracyclines, chlorpromazine, iron salts, isoniazid, digoxin or fluoroquinolones. Increases Quinidine, mexiletine, and amphetamine levels. |
| Dosage | Po (adults and child >12 years) 5-30 ml or 1-2 tablets 1-3 hours after meal at bedtime. |
| Nursing Implications | Assess location, duration, and precipitating factors of gastric pain. Monitor serum phosphate and calcium levels. In severe ulcer disease monitor PH of gastric secretions. |
| Teaching | Take as directed. Do not take within 1-2 hours of other medications. Patient with hypertension or HF should use low sodium prescription. Potential for constipation. Don't take highest dose for over two weeks. |
