Maalox - Antacid

Binds phosphate in the GI tract. Neutralizes gastric acid and inactivates pepsin.

ContraindicationsIn severe abdominal pain with an unknown cause. Caution in hypercalcemia, and hypophosphatemia
Side EffectsConstipation and hypophosphatemia
InteractionsDecreases absorption of tetracyclines, chlorpromazine, iron salts, isoniazid, digoxin or fluoroquinolones. Increases Quinidine, mexiletine, and amphetamine levels.
DosagePo (adults and child >12 years) 5-30 ml or 1-2 tablets 1-3 hours after meal at bedtime.
Nursing ImplicationsAssess location, duration, and precipitating factors of gastric pain. Monitor serum phosphate and calcium levels. In severe ulcer disease monitor PH of gastric secretions.
TeachingTake as directed. Do not take within 1-2 hours of other medications. Patient with hypertension or HF should use low sodium prescription. Potential for constipation. Don't take highest dose for over two weeks.
