| All Caps | Uses only uppercase letterforms for each letter. |
| Analogous | Colors that are side by side on the color wheel. They create gentle and relaxing color schemes. |
| Animate CC | Adobe Animate CC is the rebranded version of the revered animation and interactivity application known as Flash Professional CC. Animate CC retains all of the functionality present in Flash Professional CC… and even more. |
| Anti-Aliasing | A software rendering technique of which the primary goal is to soften or eliminate jagged lines. Often applied to text. |
| API | Applications Programming Interface: A documented set of functions protocols that allows one piece of code to take advantage of another in its execution. |
| APK | Android Application Package: An APK can be installed on an Android device as an executable program. The IOS equivalent is IPA. |
| Armature | An armature in Animate CC allows for movement through inverse kinematics. Armatures can be composed of multiple Movie Clip Symbol instances or through a simple shape. |
| Array | An array is a structured, index-based object type that allows a number of different values or references to be stored in a single object. Arrays in ActionScript begin with index 0. |
| Asymmetrical | Achieves balance with different elements with different weights on each side (or the top and bottom) of an image. |
| Attribution | Written acknowledgement provided with the name of the original copyright holder of the work. Creative Commons and other licenses feature different kinds of attribution requirements. |
| Balance | Evenly distributed, but not necessarily centered or mirrored. |
| Beta | Considered an unstable program. Generally, when a program is in beta, it must be tested in various ways before being considered stable. |
| Bitmap | Images represented by stored pixel data within a grid. Scaling a bitmap will degrade the visual representation of the image. |
| Blackletter Fonts | Also known as old English, Gothic, or Textura. Feature an overly ornate style. Convey a feeling of rich and sophisticated gravitas. |
| Blank keyframe | A keyframe with no content whatsoever. Represented in Animate CC with an unfilled circle. |
| Bug | generally an error, fault, or failure in a piece of code that needs to be addressed |
| Canvas | an HTML5 element that allows the rendering of complex graphics and interactivity through JavaScript |
| Cast shadow | the shadow cast on the ground and on any objects that are in the shadow of the form. Shadows fade as they get farther from the form casting the shadow |
| Chaotic lines | look like scribbles and feel unpredictable and frantic. Convey a sense of urgency, fear, or explosive energy |
| Class | a class is a template through which code instances can be created. This is very similar to the relationship between Symbols and instances in Animate CC. |
| Color | the perceived hue, lightness, and saturation of an object or light |
| Color harmonies | color rules that are named for their relative locations on the color wheel. |
| Comments | commenting code will prevent that code from being executed. Comments can also be added to code for reasons of documentation. |
| Complementary | colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. They are high in contrast and vibrant |
| Contrast | creates visual interest and a focal point in a composition. It is what draws the eye to the focal point. |
| Creative commons | ways that artists can release their works for limited use and still choose the way the works are used and shared: Public Domain, Attribution, ShareAlike, NoDerivs, NonCommericial |
| Curved (line) | expresses fluidity, beauty, and grace |
| Decorative fonts | also known as ornamental, novelty, or display fonts. They don’t fall into any of the other categories of fonts. Convey a specific feeling. |
| Deliverables | a predetermined list of items that will be delivered to the customer |
| Demo reel | a video or audio presentation meant to showcase your work. Almost like a portfolio of work but specific to video and audio formats. |
| Deprecation | A status applied to a piece of code or other functionally that is meant to steer people away from using a particular feature. Most often, the user will be urged to adopt a replacement. |
| Design elements | the building blocks of art defined by artist to provide a framework for creating art. |
| Design principles | the essential rules or assembly instructions for art |
| Diagonal (lines) | Lines traveling neither on a vertical nor on a horizontal path. Express growth or decline and imply movement or change |
| Dingbat fonts | Also known as wingdings. They are a collection of object and shapers instead of letters. |
| Direction | A common way to describe lines, such as vertical, horizontal, diagonal. |
| DRM | Digital Rights Management: A general term referring to protections and licensing enforcement up a piece of media. |
| ECMAScrip | A scripting language specification standardized by ECMA International. Both ActionScript and JavaScript are implementation of ECMAScript standard. |
| Elements of art | the building blocks of creative works. They are the “nouns” of design, such as space, line, shape, form, texture, value, color, and type. |
| Emphasis | describes the focal point to which the eye is naturally and initially drawn to in a design. |
| Event | events can generally be listened for, and reacted against, in various, programming languages. Some common events to listen for are those broadcast when a mouse is clicked or a key is pressed. |
| Fade-in | sometimes referred to as a “dissolve” or simply a “fade”. A fade-in is a basic transition technique where the opacity of one layer is changed over time to either transition to or reveal additional content. |
| Fair use | a set of rules that specify how and when copyrighted materials can be used and the make sure copyright protection doesn’t come at the cost of creativity and freedom. |
| Feedback loop | a system set up to continually encourage and require input and approval on a project’s direction |
| Filters | filters in Animate CC can be added to certain object types to apply different effect like glows or drop shadows. Filters can be stacked, and one object can have multiple filters applied to it. |
| Flash plater | the web browser plugin that has pushed creativity forward on the Internet- even when web standards stagnated. While much functionality can be achieved with native web technologies, Adobe Flash Player is still an integral technology for games, premium video, and even more |
| Flash Professional CC | For nearly 20 years now, Adobe Flash Professional CC has enabled rich creativity on the web and beyond. In early 2016, Adobe will release a rebranded version of this application named Animate CC |
| Flow | a category related to the energy conveyed by lines and shapes. |
| Focal point | what the design is all about. The call to action or the primary message you are trying to get across |
| Form | describes three-dimensional objects, such as spheres, cubes, and pyramids. |
| Frame | frames are a unit of measurement in Animate CC. An animation will run at a specific FPS (frames per second), and how many frames exist across the timeline, along with the FPS, determines the length of the animation. |
| Function | A defined group of commands and logic that can be invoked by a program to fulfill a certain task |
| Geometric (lines) | tend to be straight and have sharp angles. Look manmade and intentional. Communicate strength, power, and precision. |
| Geometric shapes | predictable and consistent shapes, such as circles, squares, triangles, and starts. They are rarely found in nature and convey mechanical and manufactured impressions. |
| GIF | Graphics Interchange Format: A lossless bitmap image format limited to 256 colors. Best used for simple images due to the limited palette. GIF images can also be animated |
| Glyph | Each character of a font, whether it is a letter, number, symbol, or swash. |
| Gradients | A gradient in Animate CC is type of color swatch consisting of two or more colors that visually blend into one another via a transition of properties. |
| H.264 | MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding: The most common video format for web-based video. Sometimes referred to as “AVC” or “MPEG-4 AVC.” |
| Hand-drawn lines | appear as though created using traditional techniques, such as paints, charcoal, or chalk. |
| Handwritten fonts | also known as hand fonts, they simulate handwriting |
| Headshot | A realistically photographed portrait used for branding, casting, social media |
| Highlight | the area of a form that is directly facing the light and that appears lightest. |
| Horizontal | moving from left to right; for example, the horizontal line in an “H”. Expresses calmness and balance. |
| Horizontal scale | describes the function of stretching letters and distorting the typeface geometry. |
| HTML5 | Version % of the Hyper Text Markup Language. HTML defines the page markup elements used for layout and content and can be interpreted and displayed by a web browser |
| Hyphenation | determines if and when words should be split with hyphens when wrapping to the next line |
| Ideographs (ideograms) | Images that represent an idea, such as a heart representing love |
| Implied lines | lines that don’t really exist but are implied by shapes, such as dotted or dashed lines, people waiting in lines, or the margins of a block of text. |
| Indent | Settings that determine how far an entire paragraph is indented from the rest of the text on each side or in just its first line. |
| Instance | when a class is instantiated with the “new” keyword in ActionScript, a new instance of that class is created that we can then work with. |
| Instances | objects used within a project that are based upon Symbols created and stored within the project Library. Instances can have many properties adjusted individually, apart from the Symbol itself. |
| Inverse kinematics | at times this is referred to as IK. Inverse kinematics is a model of movement employed by Animate CC for use upon armatures. It is a system of bones and joints that all interact with one another, creating natural movement. |
| Iterations | New versions of a design that successively become closer to the desired result. |
| Iterative work | work that is shared as it is completed, allowing the customer to chime in with comments while it is still easy to make a change |
| JavaScript | the programming language used for the native web |
| JPG | Joint Photographic Experts Group: a lossy bitmap image format used heavily on the web. Suitable for complex images list photographs. Also represented in the form JPEG |
| JSON | JavaScript Object Notation: a human-readable way to structure data that is also easily ingested and parsed by software. |
| Justified | aligns text to a straight edge on both the right and left edges of a paragraph |
| Kerning | the space between specific letter pairs |
| Layer | layers exist as part of the Animate CC timeline and serve the dual functions of containing image, sound, code, and other data as well as to provide a mechanism to arrange the visual stacking order of content. |
| Leading | the amount of space between the baselines of two lines of text |
| Licensing | A way to legally use copyrighted material for a certain time and in a certain way, usually associated with paying a fee established by the copyright holder. |
| Ligatures | Special characters used to represent letter combinations, such as “fi.” |
| Light source | the perceived location of the lighting in relation to the form |
| Line | a mark with a beginning and an end point |
| Loop | a programming construct that repeats a certain piece of code a certain number of times depending upon some logical operator |
| Mask | layers in Animate CC can use their contents to mask other layers grouped beneath them. Any content covered by the mask object will appear visible, while any content outside of that overlay will not be visible. |
| Meme | an idea, often expressed on the internet through images and video, which spreads from person to person, often becoming culturally significant |
| Metadata | information that is included in a document but is hidden, such as copyright, lens information, location via GPS, camera settings, and more |
| Methods | methods are functions that exist as members of a class in ActionScript |
| Model releases | the permission that is required when a person’s face is identifiable in a photo and the image will be used to promote something- whether it’s a product or idea |
| Monochromatic | different shades and tints of the same color. Communicates a relaxed and peaceful feeling |
| Monospaced fonts | fixed-width or non-proportional fonts that use the same amount of horizontal space for each letter |
| Movement | visual movement within an image, such as the natural tracking of the eye across an image as the eye moves from focal point to focal point |
| MP3 | MPEG-2 Audio Layer III: a lossy audio file format and the most common audio file format on the web |
| Negative space | blank areas in a designs. Also known as white space |
| NoDerivs (ND) | Creative Commons licensing. Requires that you not change material when you incorporate it into your own work. It can be used freely, but you must pass it along without change |
| NonCommerical (NC) | Creative Commons licensing: Means you can use work in your own creative work as long as you don’t charge for it. |
| Specifications | detailed written goals and limits for a project. These are sometimes one of the deliverables of a project |
| Spritesheets | in order to require as few server calls as possible, bitmap images can be packed together into a single image that is loaded only once. The loaded image can then be parsed in accordance with an accompanying data file. |

| Style (line) | an effect applied to a line, such as varying width, hand-drawn, and implied |
