In this activity you will be look at electronic mail and learn basic e-mail fundamentals.

E-mail (electronic mail)Allows you to send and receive text, HTML, images and other data files over the Internet. It is one of the most popular online activities and has become a vital tool for electronic commerce.
Internal MailRefers to the process of sending or receiving mail by users connected to a local area network (LAN).
Text MessagingRefers to the process of sending a message but only text is shown at the reciever's end
Instant MessagingIs similiar to having a conversation with one or more people. Real time conversation can occur between users.
Internet E-mailOften referred to as external mail as it comes from "outside" of your computer. E-mail comes from the Internet.
SpammingRefers to the process of sending any unsolicited e-mail messages to many recipients to promote products and services or for political/religious purposes.
Domain NameA name that identifies one or more IP addresses. Domain names always have at least two parts that are separated by dots (for instance lsoft.com).
RecipientThe end user who requested the email from the sender, usually identified by the email address in the ‘To’ line.
SenderThe person or organization responsible for transmitting the email, usually identified by the email address in the ‘From’ line
Email addressA code representing a unique email user on the Internet. Examples might include – andrew.holston@vbschools.com, joe-bloggs@sitename.com, g.allthorpe@yahoo.co.uk
Mailbox NameIdentifies a particular mailbox on the e-mail server (andrew.holston@)
Name of OrganizationIdentifies the organization the owns the email server (@vbschools)
Domain CategoryIndentifies the server's information domain (.com)
AddressingIt identifies who will receive the email.
Subject LineIndentifies the topic of the message, usually a short description of the content or purposes of the e-mail.
Message BodyWhere you type the message.
AttachmentsThese are files which you can send along with your email, for example, graphics files, word processing documents, spreadsheets, etc.
Creating NewThe program displays a blank form for entering all the necessary message components and message body.
ReplyReply just to the person who sent the message.
Reply AllSends the reply to everyone who received the orignal message.
ForwardSend the message to a third person for futher action.
EmoticonsText symbols that attempt to convey to the recipient what the sender's emotion was.
Junk MailAnother name for Spam mail.
NetiquetteThe rules of conduct for Internet users.
