sacrifice | a ball hit when there are less than two outs that enables a base runner to advance and that results in the batter being put out; not counted as an official at bat. |
sacrifice fly | a ball hit into the air and caught that allows a runner to score; not counted as an official at bat. |
bunt | legally batted ball, not swung at but intentionally met with the bat and tapped within the infield. |
fielder's choice | a statistic charged to a batter who reaches first base safely but causes an existing base runner to be forced out on the play. |

strike zone | the area above home plate extending from the batter's knees to the midpoint between the top of the batter's uniform pants and the top of his shoulders |
strike out | (of a batter) to receive three strikes and be called out |
stolen base | a statistic credited to a base runner who successfully advances a base without being forced to run when the batter hits the ball. |
caught stealing | a statistic charged to a base runner who is put out attempting to steal a base |
hit and run | to attempt a play in which a runner on first base leaves for second base on a pitch, and the batter tries to hit the ball to the right side. |
double play | To get two outs on a single play. |
triple play | To get three outs on a single play. |
intentional walk | the act of a pitcher purposely throwing four pitches for balls which allows the batter to be awarded first base; |
scoring position | second and third base; based on the assumption that runners on these bases are likely to score on a base hit. |
umpire | an official at a baseball game who is stationed on the playing field. |
pennant | a symbol that represents winning the league championship. |
run | the unit of scoring in a baseball game achieved when a runner safely touches all four bases. |

Run Batted In | a credit given to a batter when one or more runners score as a result of a base hit, a sacrifice or, when the bases are loaded, a base on balls, hit by pitch, or catcher's interference that forces in a run. |
earned run | a run charged to a pitcher because a base runner who scores reached base on a hit or base on balls given up by the pitcher. |
earned run average | a measure of how many runs a pitcher allows over a nine inning game, calculated as: (earned runs x 9) / innings pitched. |
inning | one of the nine divisions of a baseball game in which each team is allowed to bat until they make three outs. |

extra innings | the innings played after nine because the score is tied. |
wild pitch | a pitched ball that gets past a catcher and allows runners to advance, and which, in the opinion of the umpire, cannot be caught by the catcher. |

error | a play that is incorrectly made by a defensive player and that allows a batter to reach first base, a runner to advance, or a batter to extend his time at bat. |
