AB
AlignmentA design principle that refers to how an object or text is justified in a composition.
Alternate LayoutA feature used to create layouts in various orientations and screen sizes within the same document to prepare for multiscreen use.

BalanceA design principle that often refers to the visual weight that is being shown.
BleedThe outer margin around the edges of a document which allow for color to run off the page in preparation for printing, cropping, and cutting.
ButtonA symbol which has actions applied to it in order to become interactive.
Buttons and Forms PanelA panel used to apply actions to buttons and forms used in interactive files.
Character StylesAn InDesign panel which saves character style effects changes for consistancy throughout a document.
Column GuidesGuides which can be placed in an InDesign page or Master Page to define space within the page.
Content Collector ToolAn InDesign tool which allows designers to take multiple objects and content to be used in different ways throughout a document.
ContrastA term used to define contrast in art using color, design, or other subject matter that contrast or are opposite of each other.
CopyrightThe U.S. law that protects the works of authors, artists, composers, and authors from being used without permission.
Derivative WorkA work based on one or more works that already exist.
Drop ShadowAn InDesign customization option which adds depth to an object by creating a shadow behind the object.
ExportThe act of sending or transferring a saved database to another application.
Fair UseA part of the U.S. Copyright Law which is a doctrine that indicates that excerpts of copyrighted materials may be used under certain circumstances such as news reports, teaching, and research.
FillThe inside part of a shape.
Find/ChangeA tool in InDesign which can be utilized to find and make changes to text, objects, or other elements.
Folio BuilderA feature which collects the various InDesign documents needed, known as articles, when building an app. Folio Builder is available in the Digital Publishing subscription of InDesign CC.
Folio Overlays PanelA panel which controls slideshow settings for a multiscreen project or a file intended for digital publishing.
Free Transform ToolA tool in InDesign which is used to make changes or alterations to objects.
GIFGraphic interchange format (GIF) is a common image file format that has the ability to have frames used in animation.
GradientA design technique used to gradually transition from one color to another.
Gradient PanelThe panel in InDesign CC that is used for gradient management.
GraphicA broad term used to explain objects placed in InDesign such as images.
HueA color principle that refers to pure color.
HyperlinkAn element on a page that links to another page, webpage, or area on the same page.

KerningAltering the distance between two characters. Kerning can make text more readable by increasing or decreasing the spacing.
LeadingThe distance between baselines in a paragraph.
LibraryA productivity feature designed to store objects for use in other InDesign documents, maintaining scalable attributes and placement on the page.
LineA basic component in art and geometry that is used to define shape.
Liquid Layout PanelA panel which controls rules for page layout conversion.
Liquid Page RuleA rule set in the Liquid Layout panel to control the way certain elements convert from one layout to another, such as vertical to horizontal.
Live PreflightA productivity feature that alerts the user of potential production errors in real time, automatically identifying text and image errors as previously defined in the document profile.
MOBIThe file format used by Kindles.
Master PageA design tool that contains elements that are repeated through multiple pages or projects.
Multiscreen ProjectA file intended for various screen sizes, such as a mobile device or an app for an iPad.
Multistate ObjectMultiple versions of an objects are created but only one is viewed on the screen at a time. Multistate objects are viewable in SWF format and are often used to create slideshows.
ObjectA element within InDesign which can be manipulated to create aesthetics or add purpose to a page.
Object States PanelA panel used to create multistate objects.
OpacityA color setting that affects the level of transparency an object has.
PDFPortable Document File (PDF) is a file format designed by Adobe to enable the printing and viewing of documents. Any formatting used in the document will appear the same regardless of which operating system is used.
PNGPortable Network Graphics (PNG) is an image file format that is absolutely lossless, which means it will not compress or change an image from how it appears.
PackageAn InDesign feature that places all of the fonts and linked graphics into a single folder. This feature allows for easy transfer of files to printers.
Page SetupAn InDesign feature which allows designers a quick and easy way to format pages.
Paragraph StylesAn InDesign panel which saves paragraph style effects changes for consistancy throughout a document.
Pen ToolA tool in InDesign CC that is used to define anchor points that can be altered to create paths.
PixelA square that holds the information for one color in it.
Preview SpreadA feature on the Animation panel which allows the user to preview the animation.
ProximityA design principle that defines the spatial relationship between objects.
RepetitionA design principle that defines the use of an object over and over in a repetitive fashion.
ResolutionThe amount of detail an image holds. Also refers to how many pixels are contained on the screen.
Ruler GuideAn InDesign tool used to set tabs and other guides.
SWF FileA file extension which can be interactive and is viewable in web browsers.
ShadeA color principle that refers to a color that black has been added to.
ShapeA basic principle in art. Triangles and squares are examples of shapes. They are two-dimensional by nature.
SkinA style of video controls which displays as a transparent overlay.
Smart Text ReflowA feature which allows a story to automatically create new pages to keep the story flowing.
Special CharactersCharacters which are found in the Glyphs menu. These characters can be used to denote the end of a story or article.
Story EditorAn InDesign tool which allows designers to open up the text of a story in a separate frame and make changes without having to worry about the rest of the document.
Story JumpsAn option within InDesign which gives the designer the ability to create an interactive PDF file which then allows users to jump to the continuation of a story on a different page in the document.
StrokeThe border or frame on an object.
Swatches PanelA panel within InDesign which allows a user to keep track of colors used within a file.
Table of ContentsA table that has been created from the paraghraph styles which were applied throughout the document. A Table of Contents then makes use of Bookmarks in Acrobat.
TablesA logical method of organizing and arranging data, text, or other objects by dividing them into separate rows and columns.
Text WrapA text feature that continues text to a new line when a line is full, so each line fits within the viewable window. This feature also wraps text around objects.
TextureA term that refers to the visual surface or tactile surface of an object.
TimingA feature on the Animation panel which allows the user to control the timing of the animation of each object by deciding what type of delay it might have before the animation starts.
TintA color principle that refers to a color that white has been added to.
Tools PanelThe panel within InDesign CC that contains the tools for working within the program.
TrackingControl of the uniform spacing between all of the letters in a group of text.
Type ToolA design tool in which the user may manipulate text to produce a text-based design.
TypographyThe style or appearance of printed matter.
Web-Friendly NamesObject names which are short and without spaces or special characters.
White SpaceThe area that exists around the elements of a composition. It can be white or just a space that is not filled with a specific element.
Zoom ToolThe tool in InDesign CC used to zoom in and out on a composition.
ePubThe file format native to iPads; the initial format used by InDesign to create a file intended for any mobile device and can be converted later to a more appropriate format, such as MOBI.
ePub Naming ConventionsThe rule that all objects included in an ePub and the ePub file itself must have web-friendly names.
